HIPAA Privacy Rule

The most comprehensive federal law in history concerning patient privacy, the HIPAA Privacy Rule, became effective on April 14, 2003. The Privacy Rule regulates patients' rights and practitioners' responsibilities regarding the use and disclosure of confidential health information.

To help practitioners become compliant with the HIPAA Privacy Rule, the APA Practice Organization and the APA Insurance Trust jointly developed a primer on the Privacy Rule. Additionally, a comprehensive online resource that contains a step-by-step compliance guide and state-specific, customizable compliance forms, policies and explanations called HIPAA for Psychologists was also produced.
