An Introduction to HIPAA Privacy Rights for Psychology Clients

by Public Relations and Communications Staff

April, 2003 -- The APA Practice Organization has developed the attached material (below) that practitioners can use to help introduce clients to their privacy rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Please be aware that this material on its own does not satisfy any of the compliance requirements of HIPAA.

If you have taken necessary steps to comply with the HIPAA privacy rule, you likely are aware that there are detailed patient "notice" and other requirements. The material provided here is simply intended to enhance HIPAA compliance efforts by providing a brief introduction to patient rights under the privacy rule.

If you have not taken the necessary steps to comply with HIPAA, you may be interested in "HIPAA for Psychologists." Designed specifically for psychology practices, this comprehensive compliance resource was developed by the APA Practice Organization and the APA Insurance Trust.
