Benefits of Certification
by College of Professional Psychology
The Certificate of Proficiency has proven to be a useful tool in helping the public identify licensed psychologists whose scope of competence includes the treatment of patients for alcohol and substance use disorders.
Upon certification, you will benefit in the following ways:
- Your name, date of certification, and contact information will be included in the APA Practice Organization’s new on-line Directory of Psychologists Certified in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders. Watch for the Directory on the new practitioner portal – www.apapractice.org.
- Other professionals, members of the public, and organizations who contact the College seeking a licensed psychologist with substance use disorder experience will be provided with your name and contact information.
- Your certified status will be verified promptly when you are being admitted to provider panels, or when other employers require evidence of your expertise in this treatment area.
- You will receive information each year about APA-approved continuing education in this treatment area, including independent study products.
- The American Society for Addictions Medicine (ASAM) will notify you about its educational events.
- Each year you will receive a personal invitation to participate in National Alcohol Screening Day, which is sponsored by the College of Professional Psychology, among others.
- You will receive information about exciting practitioner projects as they become available through the APA Practice Organization, such as PracticeNet, an Internet-based data collection system offered by APA and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).
