A Message From the Practice Directorate Executive Director

by Russ Newman, PhD, JD

The Practice Assessment paid by most licensed practitioner members of APA assists the APA Practice Organization in advocating for the profession in legislatures, courts, the media, and the marketplace. Practice Assessment payers also gain access to a variety of products, services, and information -- including the many resources available at APApractice.org.

Over the years, the Practice Assessment has helped psychology succeed in such efforts as gaining federal funding for internship training through the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, pursuing mental health parity laws at the state and federal levels, and bringing legal test cases that challenge harmful managed care practices. The Practice Assessment has enabled professional psychology to offer tools for practitioners that can enhance their practice management. For example, the Practice Assessment has supported the development of information and products tailored to psychology practice that aid licensed APA members' compliance with the HIPAA Security and Privacy Rules.

The Practice Assessment also has supported the development of APApractice.org. Access is restricted primarily to practitioners who pay the Practice Assessment. We hope that many practitioners will make visiting APApractice.org part of their daily routine.

The APA Practice Organization informs Practice Assessment payers about important developments that affect them as health professionals. We let practitioners know what the Practice Organization is doing on their behalf. To stay in touch with us and with professional colleagues, we suggest that licensed members of APA and practice-oriented graduate student members visit APApractice.org regularly.
